Mud Fish Curry (Shol Machher Jhol)


  1. 6 pieces mud (shoal) fish
  2. One medium sized onion, chopped
  3. 2,3 cloves of grated garlic
  4. 1inch long grated ginger
  5. 1 teaspoon Cumin powder
  6. 1 teaspoon turmeric
  7. 1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Cilantro chopped
  10. 4,5 green chillies
  11. Enough oil to fry fish and to make curry


First marinate the fish with turmeric, little red chilly powder and salt, and fry in the oil or broil in the oven…

Fried fish

For curry, add 2 table spoons of oil in the pan and heat it.. Add chopped onion and cook until it gets soft…

Now add garlic and ginger one by one and fry them until they become little brown…

Now make a mixture of hot water with cumin powder, little turmeric, red chilly powder, salt and add the mixture in the pan and cook until you see that oil gets separated from the side…

When oil starts getting separated add more hot water and fish too… Add some green chillies on the top for flavour, check salt and add more if needed.. Now close the lid and let it cook for 5 to 7 min in medium to low flame…

At the end, add chopped corriander and cook for 1 to 2 mins and switch off the flame… Serve after 10 mins with hot steamed rice…
